Hello,

My name is Michael Schonhoff and I work at the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute. I am writing to invite you to "Stairway to Heaven: From Chinese Streets to Monuments and Skyscrapers", a new exhibition at the Artspace on view through April 4, 2009. The exhibition was organized by the Bates College Museum of Art and the H & R Block Artspace at Kansas City Art Institute. It will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog published by University Press of New England. We see it as an opportunity to create meaningful partnerships across the Kansas City region and expand upon our understanding and associations with Chinese culture.

Stairway to Heaven: From Chinese Streets to Monuments and Skyscrapers features contemporary Chinese photography, sculpture and video that analyses the changing streets of China, responds to traditional monuments, and documents the unparalleled growth of skyscrapers within the context of cultural transformation. The seventeen (17) artists included are: Ai Weiwei, Chen Shaoxiong, Wenda Gu, Gu Zheng, Hong Lei, Liang Weiping, Liu Bolin, Lu Yuanmin, Luo Yongjin, Ma Liuming, Wang Jing, Weng Fen, Xing Danwen, Yang Yongliang, Yening, Zhang Dali, and Zhu Feng. The exhibition, curated by Mark H. C. Bessire and Raechell Smith, evokes many discussions surrounding Chinese history and culture, cultural transformations and urban history, contemporary Chinese art, contemporary art markets, and street photography and documentation to name a few.

Currently, the exhibition’s public programs include continuing education courses, a gallery talk, a film screening, and 2 visiting artists. We hope to expand these programs with an artist workshop, group tours, and a family night of learning and playing Chinese games.

I was delighted to learn about your blog and abouth the Chinese language meeting group. I invite you to come and see the exhibition, or attend an event. They are listed at: www.kcai.edu/artspace
